I have met many spiritual people in my life and each one of them had a different definition for spirituality. However, there seem to be common themes running through any spiritual quest. Spirituality always seems to include a search for meaning, finding a connection to a larger energy, and finding a way to soothe the suffering in life. All of these concepts apply to love. Spirituality is love and love is spirituality.
Humans have an innate need to find meaning in our lives. This need can be seen in every religion and in any movement. Not enough people are able to see the noble spark that will lead to meaning already inside them, love. The best way that I've had meaning described to me is the worth that a life has. What greater worth could you give to your life than spreading love to others? You will find that by sharing love you will increase the well-being of yourself and others. Love is at the source of every kind act. Love is the source of all compassion. When you embrace love you will have a need to share it through acts of love and kindness. Those actions will spark love in those that are acted upon. Creating a domino effect of compassion. By triggering that effect you will begin to spread peace around the world. The meaning found in love is that of happiness and peace. That meaning will form bonds that connect every person.
Every person in the world is born with love in their hearts. We all fall in love and love our families. Every single person is connected through love. Love is a cosmic energy flowing through all of us. The more you share it with people the more love will grow inside you. When you fully embrace love, and the goal of sharing love, you will notice that there are so many opportunities to share love and make a connection. A simple exchange of words can be infused with enough love to make a difference. By reaching out to a troubled coworker you will be sending them the love that could get them through a hard time. When you create an exchange of love like that a personal connection is formed. There are countless examples like this. A kind smile to a stranger will form a bond. Hugging a friend creates a bond of love. However, the strongest bond of love is between lovers. Lovers share short bursts of pure bliss with one another on a regular basis; an orgasm forms a bond of love like no other. Love runs through all of us, we are all searching for love, and we all form connections using love. Just like it connects everyone, love will soothe the suffering of all that feel it.
Suffering is sprinkled throughout every life, it has many disguises. Suffering will appear as hunger, pain, emotional turmoil, financial hardship, as well as a plethora of other forms. However, every form of suffering has one thing in common; it is soothed by love. Whether or not you are focused on spreading love, if you're in pain receiving an expression of love eases that pain. If you're depressed, knowing that someone loves you will bring you into the light. When you are focused on spreading love you will be soothed by it so much faster. You recognize the rich nectar that is being poured on your wounds and you appreciate it so much more. You will begin to see suffering as an exercise to strengthen the love already in you. After approaching it from that perspective, the aftermath of suffering will leave you with a euphoric love that you will be compelled to share. When looking at these aspects of love (meaning, connection, and the easing of suffering) it is natural to think that sexuality is part of the spiritual practice of love.
Sexuality is an expression of love. When you are having sex you feel love building inside you until the point of orgasm. During an orgasm love washes over you and your lover, elevating your joy and illuminating the best parts of life. Love is a force that acts through you, but it is up to you how you express that love. The way that you make love will influence how much love is felt by you and your lover. Plenty of people get the most fulfillment out of sex by embracing their animal nature. They strip love making down to its core and massage happiness out of their lovers. Others add layers onto their sexuality in order to increase the amount of love that they put into the world. These layers can be role playing, exotic positions, or sex toys. Each individual enjoys different expressions of the same love. It is by embracing your individual expression that you will be the most fulfilled. Thereby, sharing the most love with other people. Love is not uniform and it is up to you to pursue this cosmic force. Whether it is simple or complex, sexuality is a spiritual expression.
Each person has their own twist on the term spirituality. Some people tie it to religion, others maintain that it's a personal quest. However one chooses to pursue spirituality there are core principles that cross over every definition. Spiritual people are looking for meaning, striving for a connection to something larger, and have a desire to ease suffering. Spreading, and embracing, love fulfills all of those principles. You can easily find meaning in a life spent elevating the amount of love in the world. By elevating the amount of love in the world you are paving the way for peace. By embracing love you will form connections with every person you meet. Love is an energy that runs through everyone and everyone creates bonds using love. Love will also ease the suffering of all those that are pursuing it. All of these principles of spirituality are seen in an expression of love, such as sexuality. By engaging in your sexuality you will find meaning by reveling in the love that is exuded. You will form an unbreakable bond with your lover. At the moment of orgasm your suffering will be soothed by the sheer amount of love washing over you. For all of these reason I am supremely confident in saying that love is a spiritual practice.
